New Labour Agreement for AK and USW’s Cokemaking Plant
07 May 2019

AK Steel and USW have finalised labour negotiations with the United Steel Workers Local 9545, ratifying a three-year labour agreement that covers the roughly 220 workers in production and maintenance at the Mountain State Carbon cokemaking plant in West Virginia.

The agreement comes as the Mountain State Carbon plant ramps up its production. Currently, production has increased to half of its current available capacity, with plans for further production expansion as the plant sells to new markets and meets expanded demand for its coke. The site has one 6m battery and three 3m batteries, with a total cokemaking capacity of just over 1Mtpa.

In particular, the site is boosting its production of foundry coke, which is a larger-sized coke that requires a different coal blend and coking time to the facility’s standard furnace coke, much of which is fed to AK Steel’s own steel furnaces.
